Hi,
This is just a configuration problem, I added a ticket because the 
pattern used should be the same in portal*_registration than in the 
widget properties:
http://svn.nuxeo.org/trac/pub/ticket/1331
You can change it in the ZMI, going to portal_registration, in the 
"configure" tab, and change the "custom member id pattern" to:
^[a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9@\-\._]*$
