Can't we? Yes but really that's a hack. It makes things more complex to manage, and it means we can't have an indexing and a search in the same transaction (as data isn't indexed yet). Also it means the indexer cannot abort a transaction for any reason whatsoever. Today I can't see a reason why it would, but I'd rather have to possibility (for instance you try to index an integer field but you actually provide a string -- whatever). If we want all our components to play well together, they need to be all XA-capable.
