 One first error is to use the DataStructure to provide data for a query.
 You should use a DataModel.

 The other horrible thing is how the cookie data is retrived by the filter
 widget. It should be done the same way things from the session or request
 are taken into account: see _updateFromSession call in
 FTI._computeLayoutStructure and _saveToSession/_removeFromSession a bit
 after. You should do something similar for cookies if it's needed.
